It's simple to use CruiseBoost. Don't change anything about the way you cruise - just do less of it. SilviaTerra takes care of all of the satellite imagery processing and analysis.

If you set up you cruise through the Canopy website and select the "CruiseBoost" option, the website will help you set up a less dense plot grid than you would otherwise need. Then collect your plots (we recommend Plot Hound) making sure to GPS each plot location. When you upload your cruise to the Canopy website, we'll boost your cruise within 48 hours.

How it Works


The first step of the CruiseBoost process is that we identify all the different forest types in your stand based on what we see in the imagery. In this example, we see that there are 30 different forest types in the satellite image and we know what proportion of the stand each forest type comprises.


Then we pair up the satellite imagery with the plots you cruised. This allows us to determine what sizes and species of trees we can expect in each forest type. We use these relationships to determine what trees were in the pixels that you didn't have a plot in.


The end result is a forest inventory that is not only more precise than a conventional cruise, but also one that includes "heatmaps" of sub-stand distributions of product volumes, basal area, and species. This heatmap shows the distribution of yellow-poplar sawtimber. You can clearly see the pockets of yellow-poplar scattered throughout the stand.

All forest inventory methods try to do the same thing - estimate the population and assess the variability of characteristics such as volume of sawtimber. A traditional cruise does this by putting in a random grid of plots.

The trouble is that the grid might happen to miss exceptional areas or may not represent them proportionally. For example, this grid has 1 of 10 plots in a very low basal area area (a landing) and a traditional cruise workup would say that 10% of the stand has very low basal area. But if we look at the satellite imagery, we see that actually 15% of the stand has very low basal area. This means that our estimate isn't as precise as it could be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of imagery does CruiseBoost use?

Because different sizes and species of trees show up differently in different types of satellite images, we use a variety of satellite imagery to stratify your stand. Some of the data sources we use regularly are Landsat, NAIP, PALSAR, and SRTM. If you've already flown other types of imagery (LiDAR, hyperspectral, etc.), we're usually able to incorporate those images as well to achieve even greater efficiencies.

How is CruiseBoost different than other remote sensing approaches?

Several remote sensing forest inventory companies have tried to develop products that use very high-resolution imagery (such as LiDAR) to pick out individual tree canopies and literally count every single tree. While this seems like an obvious approach, it has several key drawbacks (see table below). On the other hand, CruiseBoost doesn't try to count every individual tree - instead we take a well-understood statistical sampling approach (similar to the forest typing and stratification that you're used to) that operates at a 15x15 meter resolution (about the size of a 1/20 acre plot).

We're able to assess our model quality through a "bootstrapping" approach where we iteratively drop individual plots, rebuild the model, and then predict various metrics for the excluded plot. If CruiseBoost doesn't tighten up your confidence intervals, we'll refund your CruiseBoost payment.

In statistical terms, CruiseBoost is a model-assisted estimation approach. This means that the CruiseBoost estimates are constrained by your original estimate from the traditional plot gid. Your CruiseBoost estimate cannot be worse than the underlying traditional grid cruise.
